The Engineering Process at TWI

The engineering process is a set of steps that engineers must follow in order to find a solution for a problem. This involves identifying the goal, determining constraints, designing the building, and then testing. This is a crucial aspect of every project we undertake at TWI. It helps us ensure that our projects comply with high performance and safety requirements. This is particularly crucial for New York City projects as they have to meet stringent requirements.

During this phase students research the issue they’re confronted with in order to understand what the challenge is and gather data. This is an open-ended, student-centered approach to science that reorients classes away from traditional teaching.

Students brainstorm ways to solve the problem. This is done by having discussions, writing on a whiteboard or by using software. It’s okay if a few ideas aren’t working. They can try other options and try them.

After analyzing the results of their research and brainstorming, the group chooses a solution to create and build. This can be done on paper, using CAD software or by creating a physical or virtual prototype. This is a great step for students because they can create tangible objects that can help them to test their solutions.

This is where the rubber meets the road for engineers as they must stay within constraints which are imposed on them such as cost of time, tools, resources and more. Engineers must also be aware that their solutions must be safe and efficient so they can be used in the real world.
