Ole Kirk Christiansen, a carpenter from Billund in Denmark, founded his company in 1932, with the intention of encouraging imaginative play and creativity in children. In the beginning, he produced stepladders but the effects of the Great Depression forced him to be flexible and change his business model. He changed his focus on the manufacture of toys and He created one of the most loved brands in the history of the world.

Christiansen was a forward-thinking person who was quick to embrace new materials and techniques. In 1947, he was the first company to purchase a plastics injection molding machine in the world. This greatly enhanced the capabilities and selection of Lego products. The machine also let him explore a design that would eventually become the iconic Lego brick. The bricks came with pegs at the top and hollow bottoms that were interlocked with each others, allowing children build complex structures that went beyond the capabilities of the wooden blocks of previous generations.

The 1950s were a time of growth for the company. Godtfred Kirk Christiansen’s daughter Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen was a member of the management staff and she began to modernize the manufacturing process of the company. The expansion included the launch of dollhouses, furniture and Minifigures, individual figures. In 1979, the company expanded into space with sets presenting astronaut minifigures, rockets, lunar rovers, and spaceships and into the medieval realm with a Castle theme.

In 1990, the company introduced three Model Team Sets that were made for builders who were advanced. These sets introduced tiny parts like gears, axles, and levers, as well as the kind of realism and accuracy that was unprecedented in the Lego series at the time.
